Comparing Massage Business Practices

Massage therapy is becoming an increasingly popular form of stress relief, self-care, and healing. Massage is often used as a complementary or alternative therapy to traditional medicine, for conditions such as chronic pain and anxiety. Massage therapy aims to provide relief and relaxation. Deciding where to get a massage is influenced by the type of experience you are looking for. The typical places to get a massage include chains, spas and private practices and each have similarities and differences. I personally have worked for chiropractors, salons, spas and my own private practice. My best experience has been working for myself, which probably doesn’t surprise you. It is so nice to structure things the way I want to, but they all have their different pros and cons. Honestly the massage field is struggling. Spa, salons and chiropractors generally don’t pay a sustainable wage to live off of and it is usually a stepping stone. Because of this there is a lot of turn over. I think we will see more and more private practices show up. Usually these are very customized businesses on what they are wanting to offer, which is awesome. The massage therapist gets to choose the style of modalities they want to offer and specialize in, not a spa. I offer lots of modalities and quite enjoy having a mix of offerings that a lot of spas and other places don’t offer. I really love making my own schedule. I won’t lie, owning a business is a lot of work though and it is not for everyone.

Massage Businesses have a few things in common: purpose, training, health consciousness, and client interactions. They all try and create less stress and relaxation. Here are a few things Massage Businesses have in common in more detail.

Similarities:

  • Purpose: All aim to provide stress relief, relaxation, and self-care through various massage techniques.

  • Training Required: All practitioners must be licensed and trained with expertise in different types of massages.

  • Sanitation: They all prioritize hygiene, cleanliness, and comfort to provide clients with a safe and enjoyable experience.

  • Health Conscious: They focus on wellness and contribute to physical and mental well-being.

  • Appointments: all schedule appointments with clients and provide estimated duration and massage style.

  • Client Interactions: They are service-based and interact directly with their clients to meet their needs.

They all aim to provide high-quality service to their clients, although the level of customization may vary between different types of establishments.

Chains

  • Chains are larger corporations with multiple locations across the country.

  • They offer standardized services so that they are consistent throughout all locations. They primarily focus on the most popular massage types including Swedish and deep tissue.

  • Generally more affordable with subscriptions, memberships, or discounts to attract a larger range of customers.

  • Typically include flexible appointment availability to accommodate their customers' busy schedules.

  • Training is generally standardized to keep the level and quality of service consistent through therapists and locations. Quality may still vary between locations or even between therapists.

  • Chains customarily have a functional and minimalist atmosphere to create a familiar environment. The ambiance is less individualized and appears more corporate.

  • Clients may have limited interactions with their therapists and often see different practitioners for each visit. Customer loyalty is more focused on membership rather than relationships.

Spas

  • Spas can be standalone entities or can be part of hotels, resorts, or wellness centers.

  • Often have a wider range of wellness services including body wraps, facials, scrubs, aromatherapy, and saunas.

  • Some spas use high-end products for treatments that are exclusive to their location and have products for sale as a luxury addition or aftercare for their services.

  • Because spas aim to offer upscale experiences they typically have higher prices due to premium services and additional amenities. Sometimes offer packages that provide discounts for multiple services.

  • Designed with a focus on relaxation and luxury, using soothing neutral dark colors, light soothing music, soft lighting, and high-end comfortable, stylish furnishings.

  • Typically includes amenities like hot stones, aromatherapy, quiet lounges, jetted tubs, pools, or steam rooms to enhance the overall experience.

  • Spa appointments may be limited to specific times or days depending on the spa operating on a more boutique model with a smaller staff.

  • Often hire experienced staff with specialized training. Spas tend to be more personalized with the therapist taking time to discuss client preferences and concerns, conducting assessments, and follow-up with them. Clients often return to the same therapist.

Private Practices

  • Privately practices are typically owned and operated by a single massage therapist.

  • These professionals may operate out of a dedicated studio, clinic, or they may come to you.

  • Private practice offers a more personalized experience compared to chains or spas, as the therapist takes time to get to know their clients and provide tailored massage experiences as well as take their specific needs in to consideration over time.

  • Many private practitioners often specialize in a particular are as sports massage, chronic pain, injury rehabilitation, pregnancy massage, or specific modalities.

  • The services provided may vary widely depending on their experience, preferences, modalities, specialties, and client base.

  • Ambiance is usually designed and reflect the tastes and style of the massage therapist.

  • Appointment availability is highly personalized depending on the massage therapist and the clients they want.  Typically more flexible hours than chains or spas, and may schedule outside of typical business hours. Often prefer to have a small select clientele.

When choosing between a massage chain, spa, or private practice, clients should consider their needs and wants, between budget, styles, experience, and relationships they are seeking. Each option has unique offerings and caters to different preferences and lifestyles. Overall, chains offer lower prices and standardized services, spas provide an upscale luxurious ambiance with additional add-ons and private practices offer personalized services depending on therapist specialties and clients' needs. Massage therapy is a well accepted form of self-care and the healing arts. It has come a long way from when I started doing massage 25 years ago. People believed it was fluff stuff that girls do at the spa and it didn’t do much from a therapeutic standpoint. Nowadays doctors even recommend massage therapy for various reasons. Our lives seem to get busier and busier and we all need regular maintenance now. I recommend a once a month maintenance schedule for everyday life. Though most of us live with much more stress than what everyday life should have. It helps so much to have little mini vacations on the massage table allowing the body, mind and spirit to decompress. Regardless of where you end up, good luck in finding your place for bodywork and healing!
